Uruguay is located in the southeastern part of South America and is home to some 3.5 million, mostly Spanish speaking, people. Little is known of the inhabitants of this region before the arrival of Europeans in the early 16th century. The area became a zone of contention between Spain and Portugal with Uruguay becoming an independent state in 1828. Independence Day is celebrated on Aug 25. Other important dates in Uruguay include: Año Nuevo (Jan 1), Pascua (varies), Día del Trabajador (May 1), Día de la Raza (varies) and Navidad (Dec 25).
