Suriname: Flag and Map T-Shirts & Other Gifts

Suriname lies on the northern coast of South America and as of 2009 was home to nearly 500,000 people. Dutch is the official language but numerous regional languages are also recognized. The region had already been inhabited for thousands of years by the time Europeans arrived and encountered numerous indigenous tribes, most notably the Arawak and Carib. Dutch settlement began in the 17th century and the Netherlands retained control until self governemnt was granted in 1954 and full independence was gained in 1975 on Nov 25. Other important dates in Suriname include: New Year's Day (Jan 1), Holi/Phagwa (varies), Labor Day (May 1), Day of the Indigenous People (Aug 8) and Christmas Day (Dec 25).
