The South African flag was adopted on April 27, 1994 and comprises a black triangle with yellow border at the hoist, a horizontal 'y' shaped band of green with white border to its right and finally an upper red and lower blue horizontal band at the fly. South Africa is situated at the southern tip of Africa and has a varied landscape including a vast scrubland, the Karoo, in the interior. The outline of the map is irregular but striking and combines effectively with the rainbow colors of the flag to create attractive and distinctive designs for South African national mementos.
