The flag of Papua New Guinea was designed by 15 year old Susan Huhume and adopted on 1 July 1971. It consist of two diagonally separated background colors, black and red with five white stars of the Southern Cross in the black portion (nearest the hoist) and a yellow silhoueete of the bird of paradise in the red portion. Papua New Guinea comprises the eastern half of the island of New Guinea plus numerous offshore islands and has been an independent nation since 1975.
