The Malagasy flag was adopted on Oct 14, 1958 and consists of two horizontal bands, one red above the other green, plus a white vertical band at the hoist. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and is located off the southeast coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The island mostly comprises central highlands, a northern massif and coastal lowlands. As an island nation the vertically elongated map outline is easily recognized and combines well with the bright flag colors to create distinctive and appealing designs for Malagasy national mementos.
