Ecuador is a nation of over 13 million people located on the Pacific coast of South America. Most Ecuadorians speak Spanish although Quechua is also an official language. This region has been inhabited for over 9,000 years and contained various tribal groupings and confederations prior to invasion by the Incas beginning in 1463. Less than a century later, in 1531, the Incas were displaced by the Spanish and the area became part of the Spanish empire until independence was secured on May 24, 1822. Important dates in Ecuador include: Año Nuevo (Jan 1), Viernes Santo (varies), Día del Trabajo (May 1), Día de Quito (Dec 6) and Navidad (Dec 25).
