Bolivia

As of 2010 some 10 million people live in Bolivia. Spanish is the most widely spoken language and enjoys official status along with 36 native languages, notable among which are Quechua and Aymara. Western Bolvia was formerly home to a powerful empire centered on Tiwanaka, which flourished until about AD 1000. The Incan empire expanded into the region after about 1400 but was soon superseded by European settlement from 1524. Bolivia gained independence from Spain in 1825, which it celebrates on August 6. Other important dates in the Bolivia include: Año Nuevo (Jan 1), Carnaval (varies), Semana Santa (varies), Dia de la Raza (Oct 12) and Navidad (Dec 25).
