As of 2009 Argentina was home to some 40 million people with spanish being the first language of most. Although this part of the Americas was first settled perhaps around 11,000 BC, modern culture incorporates little from those prevailing before european settlement, which began in the 16th century. Argentina is a presidential representative democratic republic and celebrates it's Independence Day (from Spain) on July 9. Other important dates in Argentina include: Año Nuevo (Jan 1), Viernes Santo (varies), Día del Trabajador (May 1), Día de la Independencia (Jul 9), Día de la Raza (Oct 12) and Navidad (Dec 25).
