The flag of Italy was adopted on Jan 1, 1948 and comprises three vertical bands colored (from the hoist) green, white and red. Italy is a peninsular nation in southern Europe mostly surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, whose territory also includes Sicily and Sardinia. The country's upland areas include Alpine terrain in the north and the Apennine range running through the center of the peninsula, between which lies a large plain in the Po valley. The outline of the map is instantly recognizable and in combination with the complementary colors of the flag creates attractive and iconic designs for Italian national mementos.
