The flag of Germany was adopted on May 23, 1949 and is a horizontal tricolor comprising, from top to bottom, a black, red and yellow band. Germany is located just west of central Europe with northern coastlines along the North and Baltic Seas. Northern Germany is a lowland region with forested uplands appearing further south, which merge into the Alps at the southern border. The map outline is compact and quite rectangular and is combined here with the bold colors of the flag to create striking and distinctive designs for German national mementos.
